On Sunday 25th March, 2007, St Anthony’s School, Greenmount celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Over the last 50 years, St Anthony’s School has grown into a strong faith community. It began its educational life under the guidance of the sisters of The Daughters of Charity and the Franciscan Fathers.
From its humble beginnings in Bellevue with an enrolment of between 30- 50 children it now has nearly 500 children enrolled and is situated on beautiful Blackboy Hill in Greenmount. In about 1961, the Salvatorian priests took over the spiritual guidance of the community. In 1969 the school was closed for a year when the Daughters of Charity had to withdraw but in 1970 the school re-opened with the sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart taking the helm. After several years of planning, the school began its relocation program which started in 1988. Its new site in Greenmount was along side the new St Anthony’s Church relocated from Bellevue five years earlier. By 1990 the whole school was operating on the new site. On Sunday, 25th March, the community came together for a special Mass which was celebrated by Archbishop Hickey. He was joined by Franciscan and Salvatorian Priests. Numerous guests included representatives of the Daughters of Charity, the Josephites and past and present students, staff and parents of the school. Afternoon tea took place after the Mass where there was much reminiscing about different events and experiences at St Anthony’s. St Anthony’s now faces the next 50 years with great anticipation.
